Perplexity Labs combines web search, code execution, and content generation into one platform. The idea is to turn your research and ideas into polished reports, web apps, spreadsheets, or whatever your heart desires.
The problem it solves
Generative AI is powerful, but building complete projects can still be a hassle. You might research with ChatGPT or Perplexity, use the output from your research as the input to create content in a tool like Gamma, then copy-paste code into an editor. It works, but it's tedious and doesn't flow particularly well. Perplexity Labs does everything for you in one place.
How it performs
- Speed: About 10 minutes from prompt to finished webpage. The more complex the project, the longer it takes.
- Simplicity: Very easy to use with one interface, one prompt, and no app switching or copy-pasting necessary.
- Output: The generated pages look professional and well-structured. Since Labs relies on 'Thinking' models, making a change after the initial output can take several minutes, which is annoying. And like all Thinking models, one misstep in the chain of thought can derail the entire project.
Example
As a soccer fan, I asked Labs to create a report on top global soccer clubs since 2015, ranked by Elo ratings. It delivered a comprehensive webpage with charts and analysis, something that would have taken me hours to build manually.
The Assets feature
Every project includes an "Assets" page that breaks down the code into organized files. You can export everything as a zip to experiment locally or deploy to a server.
Who can use it
Businesses
- Business Intelligence & Finance: Provided with the data, Labs could spin up some investor reports and and data visualizations (financial or operational).
- Project Management: Create status dashboards showing project timelines and resource allocation.
- Marketing: Build campaign performance dashboards or generate content calendars.
- Sales: Create territory plans to achieve your sales quota after uploading your comp plan or sales data from your CRM.
- Pre-Sales: Conduct detailed customer research, create business process maps (Visio-style) and draft RFP responses in a visually appealing way.
Individuals
- Plan vacations with detailed itineraries and budgets.
- Visualize spending against your budget.
- Research major purchases with comparison charts.
- Build cases for promotions with supporting data.
- Create portfolios that showcase your work.
If you're tired of patching multiple tools together for projects, it's worth trying!
